Hen Night in Ipoh

My good friend is getting hitched next month. As part of the wedding ritual, me and some girlfriends threw her a hen night party in Ipoh last weekend.
 IMG_9004 IMG_9005
L got her the frenchmaid costume from Bangkok; I got her the beautiful veil from Lovely Lace (RM60); Tiara for the girls (RM2.50 each); some generic games like Truth or Dare, I’ve Never and viola! With 15 sporting hens and a drunken bridezilla in tow, the party turned out to be a blast.

I won’t elaborate how to organize a hen night this time since I’ve written two entries on the same topic 2.5 years ago. Feel free to check it out here and here.

Just to give a little perspective how long we’ve been friends since :)

This was my first night out since daddy has passed on. It was also my first weekend back to Ipoh since the funeral. It has been a weird emotional roller coaster going loops and now slowing down to a halt. It’s never the same again and no amount of comforting thoughts will change the fact or bring him back alive; but we are coping with the difference/ absence/ loss for the lack of a better word. It’s not easy but somehow, we gradually learn to live with it.

Blasts in April

it was an eventful month.
IMG_8410
Usually I would take my birthday off work and visit the spa or something but this year I decided to go to work and pray no-one will boss me around. :P In order to do this, I bribed my colleagues with 2 dozens of these the next day.
:D

If you can’t be slim… then make all your friends fat! *evil grin*

Family and I had a little celebration at Ben’s Restaurant. A new food chain from the ex-owner of Delicious Group, they have newly opened outlets at Pavilion and KLCC.
IMG_8176  IMG_8185
We ordered spicy crabmeat linguine, fish and chips and pandan chicken. I felt safe and adventurous enough to order my very first lamb chop. I REGRETTED.

The pungent lamb smell was so overwhelming that I couldn’t continue eating anymore. It was so different from during the numerous times where I nicked a few bites from my friends’ main dish… this is probably gonna be my last attempt at eating lamb.
Besides, do you know that all these lamb dishes that you chompchomp and nomnom are made from infant lambs killed when they were less than 12 months old?
The berry sundae was the only highlight of the night.

Then I was sent off to Penang for work immediately… didn’t even have time to nurse a jetlag.
IMG_8374
my boss said, let’s go Hard Rock Cafe and celebrate Stephannie’s Birthday. How sweet of him.

and 10 days later… my father bid farewell to us. This was sis and I writing thank you notes to our relatives after everything was settled. I miss my dad so so dearly…

Leonardo’s Dining Room

Exactly one month ago, I have just turned 21. I wish!
Anyway the point is I had a good celebration with some good friends at Leonardo, one of my favourite restaurants in KL. Located on the quieter area of Bangsar on Jalan Bangkung, with its inviting interior and ambience, dimly lit and sometimes can be a little chilly (so don’t wear too skimpy),  this restaurant offers a good selection of reasonably priced wine not to mention their fusion twist menu have always lived up to expectation.

Still remember birthday girl was the first to reach the restaurant… the rest subsequently arrived only half an hour later. On a rainy Friday evening, it’s almost impossible to escape the atrocious KL traffic jam.
IMG_8533 IMG_8556
The evening began with quite a number of starters to share. Among which I find their pork knuckle platter being the champ. It’s their signature dish so I would highly recommend it. They also have an acquired dish called Kentucky Fried Frogs, which I have adventurously ordered but didn’t have the chance to eat! That dish was gone in seconds. O_o

  IMG_8585 IMG_8588
Everyone ordered our own main and me being a  seafood lover, I picked Thai Style Vongole. Fresh and delightful, and spicy too! However I would prefer to swap spaghetti to angel hair.
IMG_8531
It wasn’t just a birthday celebration but also a chance for us to catch up, for I haven’t seen some of these folks since last year! One of my gfs was in Tokyo when the recent catastrophic tsunami hit Sendai. I said she lived to tell a tale don’t you think! Uncle Blung also moved to SG for good recently. So it was really good to see everyone together that night.

Leonardo’s also has a few local food dishes on the menu such as Bak Kut Teh and Porridges. Oh, they also bought me Choc Cheese from Just Heavenly too… my fav fav cake! :)

It was an evening made so special and memorable because of your presence. Special thanks to LB who organized the party and being so honest, who insisted it wasn’t going to be a surprise so please dress up we are going out for your special dinner. I was anticipating a party of 2 or 4, so it did surprise me to see all my favourite people there. love you all and also the tweets from the few daddies who couldn’t make it bec of babysitting duties.

Ristretto, Mont Kiara

The other day my friend Victor was telling me about the latest and bestest coffee in town is located in Mont Kiara. I have been doing a fair bit of house hunting in that area of late but never come across this place called “The Fare”. Anyway it didn’t particularly caught my mind until yesterday, which was a public holiday, and we couldn’t find a place that’s opened for lunch so we decided to give this place a try and called up Vic for directions.
 IMG_8937
This place is secluded alright. If you are coming from Mt. Kiara and if Baskin Robbins is on your right, keep going till you reach the second turning on right. Turn in and go straight, you will reach Mont Kiara 10 which is still under construction. Ristretto is located at the ground floor of The Fare.
This place instantly earned our brownie points cos it was opened on a public holiday! :)

They specialised in various types of coffee, the beans are imported but roasted locally to keep its freshness. Vic said their latte is to die for, thus I had to give it a try. I am not a fan for milky coffee…  for those who know me well will know how I love all things dark and bitter actually :P But this latte tasted really fresh and strong but not too milky. I love it.
The cherry and strawberry cheesecake was self baked by the Argentinean chief barista, Miguel. I’m not a cheesecake fan either but it was quite good. Miguel said he purposely reduced substantial amount of sugar to suit Asians’ taste, and it was baked only this morning!
IMG_8935
Free carpark. Complimentary wifi. Cozy ambience. And most importantly, it’s not too crowded.
IMG_8917 IMG_8914
LB ordered club sandwich, forgot to ask him how it was. I had potato ham salad… carby but nice.
IMG_8907IMG_8913
Calling all coffee connoisseurs in KL, give this place a try! Also a conducive place to catch up with friends. I am so jealous that the folks spotted multiple whale sharks in Tenggol this weekend, a dive trip which I signed up for but had to give it amiss… :(

Avillion Resort, Port Dickson

If you live in KL, ever wonder where is the nearest decent resort that you can escape to? Personally, I find Avillion Resort offers the closest distance and yet secluded enough to be away from the hustle and bustle. Port Dickson beach is crap so don’t bother, but Avillion is a good resort with nice facilities. Their Avispa is commendable.

IMG_0468

During Labour Day long weekend, I went there with the family to recharge after a crazy overwhelming week. The moment we reached Avillion Resort, we were greeted by friendly staffs and the surrounding sets us into a different world. A good place to unwind.

 IMG_0476 IMG_0478

We picked two water chalets as they offer “better sea views” which in my opinion, the view is really not that memorable.

IMG_0555

Spacious Room though, one King size and a Queen size bed in each chalet. Spacious bathroom too with open air shower.

 IMG_0525

We spent our time mostly either in the chalet or at the pool.

IMG_8841

Check out the peacock with its tail feathers opened!

He was obviously flirting with the girls at the pool ;-)

IMG_8888

Overall it was a comfortable stay, not super-duper fantastic but all of us were recharged and rejuvenated at the end of the short-stay. I would recommend this resort to anyone and friends who are looking for a short weekend break, as it’s only 1.5 hours drive from KL city centre.
